Peter Newman (PhD)

Director, Curtin University Institute of Sustainable Policy (CUSP)

Peter is an environmental scientist, activist and educator based in Perth, Western Australia. He is perhaps best known internationally for coining the term ‘automobile independence’. He is well published with works that include, ‘Cities and Automobile Dependence: An International Sourcebook’ and ‘Sustainability and Cities: Overcoming Automobile Dependence’ which was launched in the White House in 1999. Peter has also served as a local government councilor and continues to be personally engaged as a sustainability and transport activist. He has been a government advisor through three secondments to the Western Australian State Government. In the last secondment (2001-2003), he was the Director of Sustainability Policy in the Department of Premier and Cabinet.

Brad Pettit (PhD)

Director, Murdoch University Institute of Sustainable Policy (ISTP) and Mayor of Fremantle

Brad is the acting Dean of the School of Sustainability and the Institute for Sustainability and Technology Policy at Murdoch University.  He also serves as a senior lecturer and program chair for Sustainable Development at Murdoch University.  Brad was elected as a Councilor for the City of Fremantle in 2006 and elected as Mayor of Fremantle in 2009. His career history includes policy experience with Oxfam in Cambodia, the Australian Government Aid Program, AusAID in Canberra and most recently with the City of Fremantle.

Richard Hammond

Managing Director Sustainability and Innovation, National Lifestyle Villages

Richard has worked as an architect for more than 30 years, with experience in the UK and urban and rural areas of Western Australia, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. He has acted as a consultant to Federal, State and Local Governments, the National Capital Development Commission, community based organisations and many private sector clients. For the past 10 years Richard has taught Architectural and Urban Design at Curtin University where he is a senior lecturer.

Martin Anda (PhD)

Director, Environment Technology Centre, Murdoch University

Martin is a designer, researcher and practitioner of environmental technologies and systems for the sustainable development of human settlements. He has worked with a number of communities to develop integrated settlement upgrade plans.   As an Ecological Engineer he has designed and developed water conservation audits and strategies, wastewater reuse systems, energy efficiency audits and strategies, organic waste recycling systems and permaculture food production landscapes.  He has worked in urban, remote indigenous and rural community settings for these projects.  He also teaches undergraduate students and is currently Program Chair of Murdoch’s new Environmental Engineering degree program. Martin helped establish the Environmental Technology Centre at Murdoch University where he was previously the Director and coordinates the Remote Area Developments Group (RADG), an organisation that conducts research, development, and training with indigenous communities.

Kathy Anketell

Carbon Reduction Coordinator, South Fremantle Senior High School

Kathy is the Carbon Neutral Project Officer at South Fremantle Senior High School. This is a multifaceted project that aims to increase awareness of the implications and possibilities of global warming with the goal of the school becoming carbon neutral.  Kathy has worked for more than 25 years as a Registered Veterinary Nurse, as Catering Officer on STS Leeuwin and HM Bark Endeavour and has been a City of Fremantle Councilor.  Kathy holds a BA in Sustainable Development and Politics from Murdoch University.
